Describe your reflections on your internship project—what went well, what would you do differently, and what stands out to you? I think something that went well was the teamwork with my fellow intern Lytle. We were able to crunch out the project in a well paced manor with the help of working together. I thank something we could have done differently would have been to write down a plan of action on some paper and to sketch out each step of the process to better visualize what it was exactly what we needed and wanted to do. Something that stood out to me in the whole process was great something can look with only a few short steps, whether it be adding just that little paint on the sides of the frame can make it that much better. What advice would you pass on to future interns? What are the most important skills for a student to be successful at his/her internship? How could another student develop these skills prior to beginning an internship?
For me the hardest and most important thing was to take the time each day to remember to keep your website not only up to date with the latest requirements for said website. It can be hard staying on top of or maintaining a good schedule with your website but the more time you put into it is the more you get out of it. Same would go towards your internship itself. Making sure to put in an effort into your internship and going the extra mile will not only make the people taking the risk of letting in as an intern a lot happier but also will give you the chance to prove to yourself how much you truly can do. Something you can do to prepare best for these challenges and skills would be to work on keeping a good schedule whether through a planner or calendar keeping track of your time is an important skill to build (also for your time sheet during internship)

How have you seen your role develop or change over the course of your internship?
When I initially came in the first week Lytle and I were mainly doing daily chores and then making demos. Once we reached the second week the majority of time was spent on demos but we slowly went into the pottery side with learning how to crush dry clay to be repurposed and to learn how to grind the glaze off of the kiln shelves, but things didn't really pick up until week three. Week three was the week we went from mainly 2d demos being made to learning the ins and outs of clay whether it be repurposing, making/creating the 1 week process of curing the dry clay scraps into new usable clay, making clay demos for kids or learning about the important use of underglazes. In week 4 the vast majority of our time went into clay pottery and making sure we stayed on top of the clays different messes/issues that were being presented. What is going well with your project? What challenges are you facing? Me and lytle have been laying out the base of a mural for the artist outpost for our project, and things have been working out pretty good for us so far! We have been talking with Meryl, Eryn and Roberta about planning the layout of the mural and are planning on using cardboard or wood to build a sort of polaroid type frame for the mural. The hardest challenge has been making up our mind on the design of the actual mural. We have had so many switchups and better ideas every time we think we are done. Although I see this process as something that will bring out the best outcomes! What are social interactions like in your workplace? Do people spend a lot of time socializing? Are people isolated, doing their own things? Lots of collaboration on work projects? Not much collaboration? How does the social dynamic impact or reflect the organization's work? The social interactions at my internship have for the vast majority been amazing! I've gotten to not only build good relationships with my coworkers but also the kind and sweet kiddos that are keeping this amazing alive. I have been able to sit in on some great classes and they have all really made my day brighten up and makes me want to be the best help I can! Me and Lytle have been working hard and collaborating on two projects, one being a sign outside that says see you soon and the other being a selfie station for people to show of their art work! (The photo below is of my fellow co-intern Lytle being a goober) Do you have any regrets so far? What would you do differently if you could start internship over? So far I only have a small amount of regrets and that being not starting to sit in on the classes more. I think getting to actually see the demos me and Lytle have been working on for the past 3 weeks is a lot more rewarding in seeing how the kids/adults that are learning what we have made for them are interpreting them and adding their own personalized flare to each art piece. If I could have done something differently during the start of it I would have sat in and helped in more classes. 6. What are you thankful for in your internship experience?
I would say what I am most thankful for has been the great, caring and kind people who run the Artist Outpost, (Meryl, Eryn, Meg, Roberta, Isra, Dan and many more I have yet to fully meet) all of whom have been so kind and helpful to both Lytle and I. This experience has become a truly enjoyable one and It has been incredible getting to be in a space with so many skillful artists to learn from and to help ease the load of work put onto them! (below is a photo of something that I feel represents the true strength and pure idea of what the Artist Outpost represents. Without context to what this photo is representuing you may be What limitations have you recognized in yourself that you want to overcome during internship, or use this internship experience to help you overcome?
I would say my biggest limitations going into this was truly bringing out my creativity and being able to consistently put out work I am proud of. I think my overall goal is to learn to adapt and to accept my art for what it is. I think fully understanding that not every single art piece I make is going to be great will give me a more free flowing amount of creativity and will make my art improve overtime! (The painting above was for a kids class demo and it is something that I didn't like at first but I have truly grown fond of) Describe your internship project
(ducks used to fill until actual sign photo) For my project I am going to be working on a See You Soon sign outside that is very faded, and I plan to do it in a graffiti style for the lettering of it. The color on the previous sign was really faded so me (and my co-intern lytle) will be making sure to use bright colors and a good use of color theory to make sure the colors won't fade as easy. The overall goal of this is to make something nice and good looking for people to see on their way out! What are you most surprised by during your first couple days of internship and why?
I was pleasantly surprised by the calm, relaxing, and enjoyable work environment during my internship. The combination of the beautiful outside view, the eclectic music mix, and the friendly co-workers made work fun and interesting. The other workers have been incredibly kind and inviting to both me and Lytle, and I'm excited to build relationships with everyone. (for context this is a photo of me drawing a birthday banner for one of the owners kids! This was a super fun mini project for the day and got me to work hard on accurately depicting the sesame street characters without making them look straight out of hell) In a preliminary post, please describe your hopes, dreams and fears for internship.
I hope to strengthen my ability to connect with kids, to befriend the other instructors and to grow not only in my artistic abilities but also in my teaching abilities. I am really excited to work with my friends and classmates Lytle and Sid! I hope to help with lesson planning for the kids, cleaning around and providing help whenever I am needed! I hope to use this all this experience to improve on my art and to improve the chances of me getting into a great art school! |
